As a way of reaching out to its customers and responding to their demands, Malawi Institute of Tourism’s Kachere restaurant has introduced a local dishes menu that is served throughout the week alongside other meals. Since the introduction of this local dishes menu, the response has been overwhelming with customers filling up kachere and its sister restaurant Caledonia which is on the same campus. Among others, the local foods being served at Kachere restaurant are kholowa, khobwe, chisoso, nsima ya mgaiwa, grasshoppers whilst masau, fresh groundnuts and fresh cassava are served as desert.
MIT’s Marketing Officer, Sam Chikuni said most households in town rarely prepare such local meals and MIT wanted to give people a chance to enjoy such meals that are rarely prepared in their homes.”There was a growing demand for a long time from our customers on why we were not serving local dishes and management thought it wise to respond by coming up with this traditional menu whereby people can come and enjoy a variety of local foods and since the introduction of such meals, we have seen people coming from different parts of the town to patronize our restaurants” said Chikuni.
The Nation also caught up with Kizito Kumwenda who happens to be one of the regular customers for Kachere restaurant. Kumwenda hailed MIT’s gesture to introduce such meals for its customers saying this will give customers a variety of meals they can choose from.
“As a regular customer, I am glad that management for Kachere restaurant responded to the needs of its customers. Local foods, apart from being a great component to our health, also go a long way in giving us an identity as Malawians that this is our food” said Kumwenda.
Apart from local dishes Wednesday, Kachere restaurant has barbeque Friday whereby all the relish served on that day is roasted on charcoal.
The Malawi Institute of Tourism was introduced as a training institution in the field of tourism and hospitality. Apart from the restaurants and training institution, it also operates hotels.
